Seems like 3D technology is expanding and breaks the barriers as the U.S. Government announced they changed the $100 bill. 3D elements are implemented to make the note very difficult to counterfeit. There is a 3D security ribbon containing a double image of the value (100) and bells appearing when you tilt the bill.

Here are some images:

Sample 1

Sample 2

The authorities tried to create such a bill starting about 10 years ago to make it impossible to copy and very easy to detect it’s authenticity. “As with previous US currency redesigns, this note incorporates the best technology available to ensure we’re staying ahead of counterfeiters,” said US Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner.

See the official video released to present the new improvements and let me know what you think about this. Seems like the note will be available starting next February.
First iPad commercial launched during the Oscars has been frequently discussed in the online media community for a few days now. They are not gaining all the attention as rival HP has launched an iPad alternative.

The new tablet is called the Slate and seems to offer a full touchscreen and zooming capacities. Big and clear icons allow a fast browsing experience and running applications such as Pandora and a music player. They speculated a few things which the iPad doesn’t support yet, such as Flash and Windows 7. The design is a lot similar to the iPad and the Slate may be a solution for those users preffering a Windows based platform.

Phil McKinney (Vice President at HP) stated: „With this slate product, you’re getting a full Web browsing experience in the palm of your hand. No watered-down Internet, no sacrifices.”

The HP company just posted a video where they present the Slate’s capabilities, focusing on Flash support. Have a look at the video below:

We don’t have all the information about the official launching date but HP announced the device will be available later on this year. They had this concept ready since 2008 but releasing the product at that time was not a good idea as the cost of it would have been around $1,500.

Here is a video where Phil McKinney talks about the Slate’s history:

Last night, Apple presented the first iPad commercial during the Oscars. Steve Jobs was also there at the 82nd edition of the Academy Awards.

Lower Merion School District located in Pennsylvania was recently accused for remote controlling webcams installed on laptops distributed to all students and spy them.

The school offered laptops including on-board webcams which could be easily accessed by administrators using a pre installed software. The strange story is that nothing about this possibility was specified in the documents when students signed for receiving the laptops.

A family is suing the school for invading their privacy after their son Blake Robbins was disciplined by the assistant principle for „improper behavior in the home” and the evidence was a photo taken by accessing his laptop’s webcam.

School authorities defend themselves explaining that adding the remote software was a security measure so they can locate stolen or missing laptops.

Here is a video showing how another representative from a different school is using a remote application to spy students.

It may be a good idea for schools to track their students when they are inside the institution and when they know they are supervised. But it is not acceptable when they are taking these actions out of the property and inside private houses.

Blake Robinns’s parents already filed a class action suit and they (also other families joined) are demanding damages. You can read more about this case HERE.
NASA has raised the bar again, bringing video streaming to another level by offering a reality show where daily activities of the astronauts working on the International Space Station are presented. They expect a lot of viewers during the live stream as images from 220 miles above earth’s surface will be available.

The live stream will be available for Internet viewers during the working schedule of the astronauts and the crew assisting them. Also images from the laboratories, communications between Mission Control and the crew and docking operations will be just one click away.

Basically you will be able to watch how an astronaut works and lives on a space station through the „eye” of the camera. The best part for the audience is that no ads will be inserted during the show.

The cameras used for online streaming are also used by the NASA’s command center in Houston for observation and communication. But the system is a bit different because the live stream from the space is only available when the station is in direct contact with the Earth using the high speed communication antenna and NASA’s satellite system. Earlier last week NASA offered Internet access for the astronauts on the space station.

You may view the live stream HERE.

This is another interesting story about how live streaming can help even saving a life. Read the entire article HERE.
In extraordinary situations technology that may be received as a past time may actually save your life. A recent case occurred February 7th 2010. Basically, a woman was watching the beautiful coast of St. Peter-Ording (a very popular holiday destination in Germany) using the live webcam integrated with the website. While browsing the site she spotted something strange from hundreds kilometers away simply by being in front of her computer.

A nearly frozen man was walking on the ice trying to alert somebody that he was in danger. Seeing the flash of his camera seemed like a cry for help and she alerted the authorities.

BBC reported that the rescued person was a photographer who got lost while trying to find the best place to shoot the sunset. That’s when he was spotted via that webcam and North Sea police were able to rescue him with the headlights on their cars.

You can see the live feed of the lucky webcam which saved his life HERE.

A lot of tourists head to St Peter-Ording for its beaches and sailing and a very good way to promote the location is via webcams. You can see below a snapshot showing the camera feed on the spot where this happy ending story happened.

About a week ago a similar case happened in Haiti where a man was saved after using an iPhone application.

One of the most commonly debated subjects online was the lack of Flash support for the iPhone. It started 3 years ago and a lot of contradictory opinions have been voiced but now seems like iPhone users agree that Flash is not really an essential feature for their mobile device.

Once iPad was released (without offering Flash support) the reaction was in the opposite way. End users find this unacceptable as the main functionality of the iPad is to browse the Web having the full picture, including games and videos. Adobe quickly disagreed with the iPad being released without Flash support as 70% of online games and 75% of video content currently run on the Flash standard.

One of the possible explanations for launching this product without Flash is the predicted incompatibility between iPad and Flash. With Flash Being a proprietary solution the Apple staff would not be able to personally fix possible bugs or work on optimization. They would have to rely on Adobe’s team of engineers to address the known issues.

Apple is experimenting with the ability to use the open source HTML5 standard which is still in early development. Vimeo and YouTube have launched some tests to see how the new standard works and what needs to be improved (at this point full screen option is not available, advertising runs only on Flash and there are just a few web browsers to support HTML5).

In their previous product demos they presented websites without Flash windows displayed. Apple had stated that the iPad would support Flash and they actually presented a website running Flash content in their video ads causing a vehement reaction from the general public. Rumors have already begun to circulate that Apple is already replacing those ads.

Here is how a webpage looks like without Flash support:

Something similar happened with an iPhone ad in UK which was banned because the video mislead the audience about the smartphone’s capabilities. So no Flash on the iPad means no Hulu, CNN or popular flashed based games like Farmville.

Not integrating Flash means that several web-standard functions cannot be done on an iPad such as:

- No Flash Camera
- No HDMI Out
- No Full GPS
- No SD Slot
- No Drag and Drop File Management
- No USB Port
- No 1080p Playback
- No Multi-tasking

It’s interesting to find out how iPad will compete on the market with all these limitations. Rumors say Flash apps will be soon released so I am looking forward to see what’s happening with this already controverted product.
