Different sources have posted that Microsoft is currently in serious discussions with ESPN and Disney regarding streaming their content on the Xbox console. Seems like Microsoft is trying to change the Xbox image from purely a gaming console to a more interactive media portal for people of all ages.

By paying for a subscription, people will be able to watch live streaming sporting events powered by ESPN. This is an IPTV solution similar to ESPN360 which is already available from a few Internet Service Providers. You can read how Netflix was integrated on video consoles and what are the steps to be followed for accessing this type of video streaming in this article.

About 20 million people using Xbox Live are now able to connect to Facebook or download video content using Netflix. This streaming service is also available on PlayStation and Nintendo Wii but the Xbox was originally the only console offering Netflix services. Microsoft has not confirmed the rumors and the official reaction was that the company will not discuss the future plans for development or services on this subject.

Having sold 39 million Xbox consoles, Microsoft is setting itself up as a cable network by barely moving a finger. Most of infrastructure is already created as the consoles already have significant presence within the market. The only remaining factor is to gain control of the content. As the consol is already connected to a TV and is broadband compatible, the hardware is in place to grant access to movies or TV shows instantly.

The consoles are not currently in position to replace the cable providers but still represent a significant untapped market as additional improvements are rolled out. A proven fact is that a lot of TV cable subscribers are still paying for their service plans and premium channels to access specific sporting events.

Also the advertisers are getting involved in this area because where is content the advertising is sure to follow. Big companies will be interested to advertise in this new created media channel. You can read more about how you can monetize your business with advertising here. In a few years video consoles will become more powerful devices than just gaming consoles and this because a lot of multimedia services will be integrated.
