Cloud Engines (the company behind Pogoplug) announced today two new features available with the device. Pogoplug allows you to access and share content from a local hard drive using a simple Internet connection, no matter where you are in the world. This is how it works:

With version 2 users will be able to stream content to Play Station 3 and Xbox 360 consoles from any Pogoplug device. So they can watch movies, access music files and slideshows located on an external hard drive.

“By adding media streaming capabilities to the Xbox 360 and PS3 through your Pogoplug, we are making it easier than ever to access your media on your television,” said Daniel Putterman, Cloud Engines CEO.”

Also the Active Copy application used for backup is available. This feature basically automatically updates content, creating a backup to indicated content. You can actually copy folders to another Pogoplug in a different location.

They said streaming to video consoles and backup capabilities were demanded by a high number of users that is why the release. Basically all users will get an automatic update notification regarding these improvements.

Here is a video explaining more about this:

Netflix is another service creating applications for gaming consoles. About 20 million people using Xbox Live are able to connect to Facebook or download video content using Netflix. This streaming service is also available on PlayStation and Nintendo Wii but the Xbox was originally the only console offering Netflix services.
